We are in the papers again

"We're famous", said Nate. This time we are going to be in the Sun Tribune. When? I am not sure. We had lots of pictures taken of us in our gardens. We found lots of weeds and few blossoms but no produce yet.
Today we learned about the parts of a flower. The purpose of the flower is to make seed. We took flowers apart to see the difference in a composite and a single flower. We looked at the parts through the magnifying lenses. Then we could understand how a flower makes seed.
We also had to put up a new tepee for the Three Sisters as the other blew down. A good fun day.

Nate gardens alone

June 24,2009 After a very good article came out in the KC Star today, Nate was the only one who came to Garden N Grow. He worked hard in the garden-weeding his plot, planting beans in his garden, onions in Sebastion's and sunflowers in the Lasagna Garden. He and Marlin did an experiment to see how different soils(clay, sand and silt) conduct water. Today we had Brownies for snack.

June 22. We learned about photosynthesis. In an experiment we are putting cardboard over the leaves to see if this makes a difference in how the plant grows. In the garden ,we had lots of weeds to pull. Our teepee fell over on our Three Sisters project. Only have the corn, beans and squash came up so we had to replant. Hopefully when the beans start to need a place to vine we will have a new teepee ready. We have beans and okra showing. The tomatoes , peppers , cucumbers and squash have blossoms already.
Bob Cronkleton from the KC Star interviewed Marlin, Jeff, the students and the parents. He is doing a video article on our Garden N Grow program. I don't know when it will appear but will keep you updated.
On the 24th of June Marlin will teach us about the different kind of soils. It is going to be very hot so we will be out in the garden first. Cass
